2005 Sweet Spot Classic Ron Santo Autograph

Well, here's something I've been wanting for a long time. After waiting for just the right card at just the right price, I finally got my hands on a super-cool autograph of Chicago Cubs Legend Ron Santo. This card comes from the 2005 Sweet Spot Classic Signatures insert set and features Santo's autograph in pen on a mock-up of the "sweet spot" of a baseball.

Santo was the Cubs' third baseman from 1960 to 1973, and played his final season with the Chicago White Sox in 1974. He was a nine-time All-Star, a five-time Gold Glove Winner, and is the only third baseman in MLB history to post eight consecutive seasons with 90 RBIs. Santo did all this while battling diabetes, which he concealed for most of his career. He passed away December 3, 2010, due to complications from bladder cancer and diabetes.

After not receiving enough votes from the baseball writers, Santo was finally inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2012 with help from a former teammate. In 2011 a Golden Era Committee was formed to consider candidates not previously voted in, who played in the 1947-1972 era. Billy Williams was one of the committee members and lobbied pretty heavily for Santo's induction, emphasizing not only his on-the-field accomplishments, but his struggle with diabetes while playing, and his charitable work after retirement to find a cure. Santo received 15 of 16 votes and was inducted on July 22, 2012.

  1. Sweet Santo pardon the pun but what else can one say about that auto? Congrats. It is always great to get a card you've been "stalking" at an affordable price, not these over inflated speculation and "flipped" prices.

  2. Awesome card. I've always loved UD's Sweet Spot Signatures... well most of them at least. Can't really say I like those faded signatures from 2007. Anyways... it's hard to go wrong with a non faded Sweet Spot Signature of a HOFer.

  3. Great to see some love for my guy, Santo. Other than my own I rarely see any posts that feature him.
